Undergraduate Researcher: Luis Gavino
For his 2001-02 Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity award project, Luis Gavino learned how to use a molecular biology technique that aids in analyzing genomic DNA. Then he applied that tool to the study of DNA in several strains of a single-cell organism. His mentor was Dr. Blaine Bartholomew, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology
Luis's message: "The research experience I gained from working in the lab is invaluable. I learned techniques and methods that I would never have learned otherwise. The research also allowed me to ask questions and delve deeper into subjects that I studied in classes. I have consulted Dr. Bartholomew, my mentor, on everything from school to major life decisions. He has always been there as a shoulder to lean on and an ear for advice. Looking back it is clear to see that my research experience has helped me develop not only as a student, but as an individual as well."
